This Cave Doesn’t Exist Anymore

This Cave Doesn't Exist AnymoreThis Cave Doesn’t Exist Anymore – My family and I headed out of town on a vacation that was much needed.

The wife and I had worked extra hours in order to afford it.

Isla Mujeres, Mexico is where we were going.

Isla Mujeres is a Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea, 13 kilometers off the coast from Cancún. Northern Playa Norte beaches, resort hotels and other fine places to visit. And for snorkeling and scuba diving on the surrounding coral reefs.

Diving and exploring underwater caves are what we were excited about. We were very excited to go diving as there. The kids were most excited because they were coming with us diving for the first time.

My wife and I were both experienced divers. We felt confident that it would be completely safe to allow the kids to dive with us.

We got to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. And found our hotel and got the luggage put away and decided to walk around a little while. There was a lot to do on this small island, snorkeling, diving, there was even a sanctuary for sea turtles.

Also, there were the remains of a Mayan Temple. As we were walking there was this strange percussive rhythm being played in most of the shops and everywhere else as well.

The drumming sounded ancient. And if I were to guess I would say it had something to do with the Mayan Temple. But the Mayans were a lost race, right?

The beating of the drums was spooky nonetheless. We decided to head out and grab dinner then hit the hay.  We wanted to get an early start exploring the underwater caves. The next morning we all headed out early to our chartered boat and boarded it and stowed our gear.

We got to the dive area and put on our gear and jumped in. The kids were right beside us as we got to the cave entrance. I took out my guideline and put the kids behind me and the wife was at the rear.

We were in the cave a good distance and it opened up into a huge cavern. As we got up on the dry land, I told the group this was not on my map. It was supposed to be flooded all the time. My wife said, “can you hear that?” I said, “Yea, sounds like those drums again.”

Well, the decision was made to explore on dry land since this wasn’t “technically” on the map. We walked for what seemed like a mile or so, we rounded a corner and the drums got extremely loud. And then all of the sudden they stopped. I could hear what sounded like talking but in a foreign language. A language I had never heard before.
