Lurch – The Addams Family

The Addams Family (1964–1966) is an American television series based on the characters in Charles Addams’ New Yorker cartoons.

The 30-minute series was created by David Levy and shot in black-and-white, airing for two seasons on ABC from September 18, 1964, to April 8, 1966, for a total of 64 episodes.

This was back when Tv was at its best IMO. You don’t find Tv shows like this anymore if so it is a rarity for sure.

The show’s characters were Gomez and Morticia Addams, Pugsley Addams, Wednesday Friday Addams, then there was Uncle Fester, Grandma Addams, Lurch, Thing.

Other characters that appeared on the show were Cousin Itt, Ophelia Frump, Grandmama Hester “Franny” Frump these are the ones I remember, they also had guest characters that appeared too. The Addams Family resided at 0001 Cemetery Lane in a pretty nice mansion.

Gomez was filthy rich and was madly in love with Morticia – his wife. I think Morticia was a painter and Uncle Fester was constantly blowing things up. Wednesday was a strange little girl and always had weird pets like spiders, and loved to behead dolls.

I always thought Pugsley was a young Uncle Fester I seem to remember he was also fond of blowing things up and playing with his pet octopus named Aristotle.

Then there was Thing – a hand – that seemingly appeared out of containers to lift the telephone receiver, light cigars, play chess, and getting the mail. Grandmama Addams was a witch and often conjured up potions, spells, and hexes she also painted some too.

Lurch was the butler who mostly grunted instead of talking. He stood a       towering 6′ 9″ tall! Gomez and Morticia would summon Lurch by pulling on a bell rope that shook the house when it rang Lurch would appear almost immediately and would say in a deep voice “You rang”? He could also play the Harpsichord that I always thought was just a piano.

I liked the original Addams family better than the movie Addams family. Gomez was definitely funnier in the original Tv show.
