My First Deer Hunting Experience

My first deer hunting experience wasn’t a very good one. I was probably 15 or 16 years old. The week before I was very excited as we prepared our mobile deer camp. No this was not a camper or a motor home. It was an old bread truck that had been converted into a camper, it slept probably 9 or 10 people.

We cleaned it up getting ready to move it to where we were “camping”. And the thing had to be towed to its destination.

The gun that I was using was a single shot 12 gauge that kicked like a mule and wasn’t very accurate over 50 or 60 yards.  I got all my stuff packed up and I headed up to my hunting buddies house.

Then we jumped in his Bronco and headed down to the camp site.

We stayed up late and had to get up very early like 04:30 AM early. When we got up to eat breakfast, it was simply pouring the rain after breakfast me not knowing any better put on my coveralls and headed out in the rain to my stand.

I was in a good spot watching over a creek and a small field. We knew Deer were in there we had seen them, so all I had to do was sit and wait. It was very cold and raining and dark. The rain finally stopped although I was still sopping wet, the clouds began to break up.

There was a shimmer of moon light that shined on the field I was watching and it was beautiful like a post card. The rain finally stopped although I was sitting there freezing my tail off. It finally got daylight and I had sat there for almost two hours before it got daylight – like I said it was my first time and I didn’t know any better.

I probably made it until about 08:30 AM and I gave up I was cold and wet and I headed back to the camp and then walked up to my grandmother’s house and I got out of those wet cold clothes and she made me a hot breakfast and we put my clothes in her dryer.

After eating and getting warm and my clothes dried, I headed back out. But I didn’t have any luck that year but it was a good learning experience. The next year and years to follow I scored Deer every season.
