Where I Grew Up – Is Hidden Away Part 5

I stopped part 4 with me telling about how my dad never had a new vehicle. He had several vehicles while I was growing up on the farm, not one of them was remotely new. We had several brand new farm tractors and equipment over the years but a pick-up truck was never an issue.

I seriously wished I had a picture of that old Chevy Cheyenne truck because a story I about to tell you would be a lot funnier if you actually knew how bad this pickup looked. As I mentioned in another post we had 500 hogs at one time. We started off with two sows (females) so we needed a boar (male).

Dad was all the time getting farm books and such listing auctions and sells all over the place. We decided to go to a hog sale in Bloomington, Indiana which was a little over four hours away. We didn’t even have a set of racks for the truck. Racks are what you put in the bed of the truck to haul cows or hogs. We built a set of racks out of wood.

I think the sale started like at 7:00 PM I know it was in the evening time.  So we left probably around noon to drive that old truck a little over four hours one way to a hog sale. We got pretty close to Bloomington and we decided to stop and eat somewhere.  The only place we could find was a Chinese Restaurant open. Can you imagine two rednecks going into a Chinese Restaurant with menus in Chinese? Dad ordered us “Chicken Teriyaki” because that is the only thing we could read on the menu ha ha. It was good too.

We finally got to where the auction was being held. It was an auction to sell full blooded Duroc hogs, we were there to buy a boar.

When we got into the sale arena, of course, they had food and refreshments. This is where I first experienced a pork tenderloin sandwich, oh my goodness it was the best thing I had ever eaten. We looked around at all the hogs they were selling.  The way you do a sale like because the hogs all look the same, you would remember the number of the hog you were interested in. Dad and I picked out several that we were interested in. The first one sold for over $21,000.00 I was in shock.

And I remember thinking to myself that we weren’t going to be buying anything here tonight.  Dad bid on a few of the ones we were interested in, but they were way out of our price range.  Then finally it happened we ended up winning a bid on a full blooded Duroc boar $5,000.00 WOW! I couldn’t believe dad had spent that much. Anyway once it was led back out of the sales arena dad said well come on we got to get this loaded and on the road back home.

Now here is the funny part. Our little OLD pick up truck were surrounded by all these big fancy one ton dually’s with nice big fancy trailers.  We backed up to the “chute” to load our hog. We got him loaded and started heading for home.  Dad and I made it to Ripley, OH. and needed to get a sandwich and something to drink so we stopped at a McDonald’s and went through the drive thru. The girl running the drive thru asked what we wanted and that hog grunted real loud Lol the girl started laughing.  We got our order placed and we pulled up to the pay window and it was dark and she was wanting to know what we had in the truck making all that noise. Dad said well stick your hand back there behind the cab of the truck and

Dad said well stick your hand back there behind the cab of the truck and pet the hog only he told her it was a dog. She extended her arm out to touch the “dog” and that hog’s nose touched her hand and he grunted again and I swear I think she screamed and jumped 5 feet in the air.  It scared her about to death. It was so funny. That is about all I have for you today, but stay tuned because we are only getting started. God Bless you all! Sorry for making such a long post, I got a little carried away.
